Renowned Fashion Designer Rohit Bal Passes Away at 63, Leaving a Lasting Legacy in Indian Fashion

The fashion world mourns the loss of Rohit Bal, an iconic Indian designer, who passed away on November 1, 2024, at age 63 due to a heart ailment. His death comes shortly after unveiling his final collection, Kaaynaat: A Bloom in the Universe, at Lakme Fashion Week, a celebration of life and nature inspired by Kashmiri artistry. Known for his distinct fusion of traditional Indian craftsmanship and modern aesthetics, Bal’s work was characterized by rich velvets, intricate embroidery, and avant-garde, gender-fluid designs.

Bal’s last runway appearance on October 14 was memorable, with the designer dancing passionately despite visible illness. Throughout his career, he dressed global icons such as Pamela Anderson and Naomi Campbell, earning respect both for his artistic vision and his role in elevating Indian fashion on the international stage. Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) chairman Sunil Sethi expressed deep sorrow, recalling Bal’s high spirits at his final show. Stylist Anaita Shroff Adajania honored him as a “rare genius” who left an indelible mark on everyone he touched.

Rohit Bal’s legacy extends far beyond his collections; he was a storyteller who wove cultural heritage and personal narratives into fabric. His passing is a profound loss for Indian fashion, but his influence will undoubtedly inspire future designers and continue shaping the industry for years to come.
