New Delhi, December 11, 2024: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi met with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla today, seeking the removal of derogatory remarks made against him by BJP MPs during the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament. The meeting followed escalating tensions within the House, with both sides trading allegations and disrupting proceedings.
After the meeting, Gandhi addressed reporters, emphasizing the importance of decorum in parliamentary debates. “I met the Speaker and requested that derogatory comments made against me be expunged. He assured me that he would look into the matter,” Gandhi said, adding that a respectful environment is essential for meaningful discussions in Parliament.
The controversy erupted after BJP MP Nishikant Dubey accused Gandhi of having ties with billionaire investor George Soros, a claim that triggered an uproar in the House. Congress MPs have strongly opposed the remarks, demanding action against Dubey for what they termed baseless and defamatory allegations.
Focus on Adani Controversy
Gandhi also criticized the BJP for allegedly avoiding critical discussions, particularly on the Adani controversy. He accused the ruling party of derailing parliamentary proceedings to evade scrutiny. “They can level any allegations against us, but we will not back down,” he said, asserting the opposition’s commitment to seeking accountability.
The Congress leader announced a scheduled debate on the Adani issue on December 13, signaling the party’s intent to refocus the parliamentary agenda on governance and transparency.
Congress’ Warning
The Congress Party has warned of intensified protests if the derogatory remarks are not expunged from the parliamentary records. Senior Congress leaders argue that such comments degrade the dignity of the House and obstruct constructive discourse.
BJP’s Stand and Speaker’s Role
The BJP has defended its MPs, accusing the Congress of trying to divert attention from broader issues. The party has not yet responded to Gandhi’s demand for a debate on the Adani controversy but maintains that the opposition is engaging in theatrics.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has assured Gandhi that he will examine the matter and take appropriate steps. The Speaker is also expected to address breach of privilege notices filed by Congress against BJP MPs, a decision that could influence the tone of the ongoing Winter Session.
Path Ahead
With tensions high in Parliament, the December 13 debate on the Adani issue could become a key moment in the session. The Congress has signaled its determination to pursue accountability, setting the stage for a potentially contentious period ahead in the Lok Sabha.
