In a heartfelt farewell ceremony on November 8, 2024, Justice Sanjiv Khanna bid an emotional goodbye to outgoing Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud, reflecting on the profound impact Chandrachud had on the judiciary and the void his departure would leave in the Supreme Court.
Justice Khanna’s speech was filled with powerful imagery. Comparing Chandrachud’s influence to a “towering tree in the forest of justice,” he said, “When such a tree steps back, the birds pause their songs, and the wind moves differently. Other trees shift to fill the void. But the forest will never be quite the same again.” This metaphor underscored the lasting effect of Chandrachud’s tenure.
Khanna praised the outgoing CJI for his “monumental contributions” toward making the Supreme Court more inclusive and accessible. Chandrachud’s steady demeanor, scholarly approach, and remarkable record of 38 constitutional bench judgments were celebrated, with Khanna noting that such an achievement might remain unmatched for years.
As he prepared to take office as the 51st Chief Justice of India, Khanna anticipated the palpable change that would follow, acknowledging that “an emptiness will resonate through the sandstone pillars of this court.”
During his own farewell speech, CJI Chandrachud expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to serve, reflecting on his journey with humility. He quoted the Jain phrase “Michhami Dukkadam,” seeking forgiveness for any unintended harm during his tenure, and expressed the honor he felt in serving the nation.
Chandrachud, who officially retires on November 10, 2024, leaves behind a legacy marked by significant judicial reforms and landmark rulings that shaped Indian law. Colleagues and legal figures at the farewell event echoed this sentiment, paying tribute to his dedication and his connection to marginalized communities. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal lauded him for leaving an “unforgettable mark” on the judiciary.
As Justice Khanna steps into his new role, he inherits a legacy of inclusivity and a deep commitment to justice that defined Chandrachud’s impactful tenure.
