Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren Slams BJP’s “Batenge Toh Katenge” Slogan, Urges Unity Amid Political Tensions

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has voiced strong opposition to the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) divisive slogan “Batenge toh katenge” (divided we fall), popularized by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Soren criticized the slogan as a tool to incite division, calling instead for unity among communities. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge joined the opposition chorus, demanding clarity from the BJP on its stance regarding such polarizing rhetoric.

Soren’s response reflects growing concerns among opposition leaders as Maharashtra heads into assembly elections, where BJP’s messaging has drawn scrutiny. Opposition parties, including the Congress and the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, argue that the slogan exemplifies a tactic to exploit communal divides rather than promote harmony and social cohesion.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has countered with his own slogan, “Ek hain toh safe hain” (we are safe only if united), emphasizing the importance of national unity. The exchange has fueled a contentious atmosphere as political leaders gear up for elections, using slogans to rally their bases and critique opponents. As these debates continue, the discourse reflects deeper concerns over the impact of political rhetoric on India’s social fabric.
